Can You Be a Work at Home Success with Kids in the House?

he main goal for many people who work at home is to have more time for the family. But then reality can sink in, and it is hard to find time to meet your goals. The kids are underfoot, wanting your attention, and you feel pulled in many directions at once.

That makes it hard to succeed as you work at home. But it does not mean it ’s impossible. What you need is better planning.

Set Up a Work Schedule

When do you need to work? When do you work best? When will your family let you work?

Think about these things as you determine the best work schedule for you. This is something that will vary from family to family, but the general rules include figuring out when the kids aren’t going to be wanting your attention. It can be early in the morning before they get up, during school hours, naptime or after they go to bed.

But if you just can’t get a good schedule going, it may be time for daycare of one sort or another. This may or may not mean paid daycare. You may have family members who can help or friends you can trade babysitting with.

Set Up the Rules

Talk to your family and set up rules to allow yourself to get work accomplished. The older the kids get, the better they can be about allowing you to work undisturbed.

Younger children will need more time and be less understanding, but you can work with them to make working easier on you both. Try setting up a little desk for your young child, for example. He or she can work side by side with you. If they love imitation, this works wonders.

Don’t forget to include everyone in the house in your rules. If you have to work during mealtimes, who is doing the meal preparation? Can you stop for meals? You should, if at all possible.

If you have a separate room for an office, an easy rule to set up is that if the door is closed, you are not to be disturbed. Open, and people can come in if they need you, but you should still be mostly left alone.

Share Your Goals with Your Family

It can really help if your family knows what you are working towards. Talk to them about what you are trying to achieve and how you are trying to get there. Don’t focus only on your long term goals; talk about what you want to do on a given day, week, etc.

You can also talk about rewards for when you meet certain goals. A family day, for example. You don’t have to spend money on rewards when time does quite well too.

Keep an Eye on the Balance

Most important is to be aware of how well you are balancing your work and your life. You still need to have fun as a family. If your schedule is really interfering with family life, rework it!

Never Give Up

Perhaps not quite never, but remember that working at home is not easy, especially in the early days. You do not want to give up easily. If things aren’t working out, stop, take a look and see if you can figure out where things are going wrong.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to combine working at home some of the time with working outside the home, just so that you can get things started without it ending in financial disaster. If this is necessary, so be it. Succeeding when you work at home sometimes requires sacrifice.

Want Some Great Babysitting Activities?

by Rex Stevenson

People of all ages baby-sit, in fact if you look online some companies have made it their business. But whether you are teenager or an adult, you cant go wrong when you take some fun activity ideas along with you for the evening. Here are two activities that can be extremely fun for the kids you are babysitting. Remember the more fun they have, the more likely you will be called back.

Bubble making Activity - Kids have so much fun with something so simple as bubbles, and they have even more fun when they make the bubble stuff themselves. You will need a few ingredients to make this happen. Bring corn syrup and dish soap with you.

1/3 cup water 2 tablespoons of corn syrup 1/3 cup dish soap

Put all ingredients together into a large bowl and have the kids find their old bubble blowers. If those old bubble blowers don’t show up then have fun with some of the kitchen utensils. Use anything with a hole in it, a handle, or a potato masher. Try different types of things.

Here is another great babysitting activity, you will want to try. Make play dough from scratch. You can do this at home before you go or with the kids. You will need a few things like water, flour, food coloring, cream of tartar and vegetable oil.

Food coloring 1 cup of salt 2 cups flour 4 teaspoons cream of tartar 2 cups boiling water 4 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Add the coloring to the water that is boiling. Add all the rest of the ingredients and mix well, the more you nead the dough the nicer the consistency will be. Store the whole thing in a plastic container. You can either make this with the kids or before you go to your babysitting engagement.

These two great activities will give the kids hours of fun. The activities can be combined and if you still are looking for stuff to do with the kids then you can add a cool Disney movie to get them relaxed. Be sure to integrate some role playing in with the play dough making.

Major New SIDS Breakthrough - What Everyone Caring For A Baby Needs To Know

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome kills more than 2,000 babies in the US each year. They are most commonly aged between 2 and 4 months and die in their sleep. The cause has always remained a mystery.

However, recent breakthrough findings reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association show that SIDS is a disease. Even so, there are ways of minimizing the risk. Reading this could save a life.

How Did They Make This Discovery?

Researchers studied the brains of 31 babies who had died from SIDS and 10 who had died for other reasons. They focused on the medulla of the brain which controls involuntary actions, including breathing, controlling blood pressure and heart rate.

The medullas of SIDS babies were much more likely to have abnormalities in the nerve cells which respond to serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical that plays a major part in the regulation of breathing and sleeping.

They also found that there were more abnormalities in the SIDS boys than girls which would help to explain why boys are twice as likely to die of SIDS.

What Does This Mean for SIDS?

Its a huge breakthrough and may bring researchers nearer to developing a test to identify at-risk babies. At the moment, such a test is still a long way off as no early warning for SIDS has been pinpointed yet so no-one knows what to test for yet.

But there are known methods of minimizing the risk of SIDS. These are methods that everyone caring for a baby at any time should be aware of and follow.

Back to Sleep

The Back to Sleep campaign, started in 1992 has cut deaths from SIDS by 50%. However, their safety recommendations still need spreading far and wide.

Of the 31 deceased babies examined in the recent SIDS study, a worrying 77% had been sleeping on their stomach or side, or sharing a bed with an adult or both.

Top Recommendations For Safe Sleeping

1. Always, always place the baby on his/her back for every sleep. This applies to night time sleeping and naps and every time the baby sleeps.

2. Make sure the baby is sleeping on a firm mattress which is covered by a tight fitted sheet. Never let a baby sleep on pillows, quilts, sheepskins or anything soft.

3. Keep the entire sleeping area clear of soft toys or objects, pillows, blankets, quilts, sheepskins and pillow-style bumpers. The baby can sleep quite happily in a onesie.

4. Dont have the baby sleep with you (or with others) in a bed, on a couch or in an armchair. If you breastfeed the baby in your bed put him/her back into their own sleeping area once youre done.

How Can These Help?

Put simply, SIDS babies dont seem able to sense if oxygen is low and rouse themselves. Following the recommendations can literally save a babys life.

Make sure that everyone who cares for the baby follows them at every sleep.

Starting A Profitable Home Business - Business Plan

by Thomas Griffin

Since you have become a small business person whether you are the Massage therapist or Sheepshearer, there is really a lot more pressure on you to be organized, not less. While a certain amount of spontaneity is beneficial and expected of small business, some structure and planning is needed if you will attempt to compete with what bigger corporations offer. You should really visualize the scope of your business and write it down. This can give you a significant idea of what your obstacles are, your current status, what your 10 year plan is, and how close you are to realizing them.

The most important thing is to remember to get every detail down on paper. This gives you a starting point, and something definite to alter if things need to be changed later on. The planning document can guarantee that you, your employees, and your investors are all together in their thinking.

The initial step in your business plan is a description of your business. This includes what you do, what services you provide and what products you will produce. In a word, this will verbalize the scope of your business. While this can be enlarged later, you’ll realize that writing down of your limits and terms is incredibly helpful for future development. This is also a good spot to include what kind of end game you have. While they can be general goals that you want to stick to, you should follow it up with some rough gross and net income figures that you are want to achieve.

The next part of your small business plan should consider the market, both where it stands and where you will fit in. Why do people need your service and how will your business or service will change the market? How are you going to get some buzz going about your services and will you have different types of customers that will be affected by various parts of your business? This part of your business plan essentially “proves” your business has a right to exist and gives evidence for why it should be something to put your time and energy into, so take some extra time here.

Financial capitol is going to be the next thing that you tackle. Include general expenses, contingency fees, licensing fees if necessary and anything else you can think of that will make you put out money. Because virtually all bankers will want to study your business plan primarily for this area, this is of utmost importance for you to work on. If you are a bit new to this, look at small business plans from similar successful businesses to see the best way to do this. Put down an accurate view of your current business status, but don’t forget to look to the future.

For the final step, think about management. Who is running things, and what are their responsibilities? This is a prime method to maintain your organization and verbalize responsibilities. Like any other part of the plan, this section can be altered, but the important thing to do is to have it there in the first place.

Take some time to be confident that your business plan is up to snuff, and you will discover that your business will start becoming profitable much faster.

Babysitting/Nanny Jobs – Challenge for Family and Caregiver

It is a well-known social phenomenon that changing parental work patterns have transformed our all-family life over the past 30 years. One of the most dramatic changes is the increased rate of paid employment among mothers with children. According to published data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall maternal labor force rose from 38 to almost 70 percent during the last 30 years and for mothers with youngest children below the age of 3, this rate rose from 24 to 57 percent. During this same period, the demand for non-parental child care increased dramatically, taking place in a variety of child care arrangements, including babysitters or nannies, family child care, care centers, au pair, family members, neighbors or friend child care arrangements, and other organized activities. Alone in the United States, a large percentage of the 35 million children and adolescents below the age of 14 with working parents are in an arrangement with a babysitter/nanny or an other type of childcare arrangement for an average of 22 to 40 hours a week. Child care is no longer simply a protective or remedial service for children from low-income or troubled families: it is an everyday arrangement for the majority of children in the United States and all other industrialized countries in the world.

There are quite a lot of social studies available determining the effects of child care on children’s cognitive and social functioning (see references below, to mention only a few of them). As a conclusion, if children and adolescents are exposed to high-quality care, their development can be significantly enhanced. However, it has also been shown that society has not taken full advantage of the opportunities of childcare provides. Many children and adolescents spend long hours, often at early ages, away from their parents in unstimulating, mediocre care, resulting in development delays and social disturbances. This conclusion of the social studies leads to a real challenge for the families in need of a childcare service, as well as for the caregiver themselves. Selecting the correct type of caregiver service for their actual situation is not an easy task for the family. There are a lot of services offered in local newspaper ads or the internet and the first question will be if you prefer a full time in-home solution, drop-in or part-time or an off-home solution (care center, all-day school programs, etc.). Whatever the decision will be, the selection of the day care center or the nanny/babysitter never should be performed without considering the children’s opinion. Especially small children have a very fine instinct and they will show you immediately if there is “chemistry” between the babysitter or nanny and the child or not. Definitely it will be not enough to hire a caregiver just by a phone interview or a five-minute talk in your office. In order to find out if the candidate fits well with your family it is essential to perform a personal interview at home, starting with the candidate and the parents and later on also involving the children. There are many reasons to accept or not to a accept a nanny or babysitter, all depends on what you are looking for. It might be important for you if the candidate is old or young, mature or in between, with college grade or even with master degree, short or tall, thin or heavy, white, black or latin, with or without religious background, etc. There are many factors that define an individual but the most important thing of all is that the nanny matches with your family. And also consider the following: The caregiver always should be seen as a person whose primary function is caring for the children. There are too many cases where babysitters or nannies are basically used as general housekeeper, making the beds of the parents, doing their laundry or cleaning toilets, etc. As a consequence, children often are “parked” in front of the TV for hours, instead of stimulating them performing creative activities like attending after-school events, reading books or helping with homework, just to mention a few of the possibilities. For a quality care of their children, it needs to be clear that first priority of the babysitter/nanny is taking care and stimulating the children and in second place realizing other activities like the participation in general housekeeper activities. Both, the family and the caregiver clearly should define this in a contract that will help to ensure that all of the terms and conditions are well understood.

I’m Scared Of The Dark! Helping A Child To Overcome Night Fears

It’s very common for children to be scared of the dark. They may have always been scared or they may have no fear for a long time and then suddenly, inexplicably develop one. Child experts believe that some children are just naturally prone to suffering from night fears. Or an experience may have created a new fear which then manifests itself as a sudden fear of the dark.

Looking For Reasons

Have there been any changes to the childs life recently? Any of these events can trigger new fears in a child:

Death of a member of the family, friend or pet

New baby in the family

House move

New child care provider

Different pre-school schedule or a change to an existing one

Change in family status due to redundancy or similar

Have they been significantly upset by a scary story or TV program or cartoon

How To Help The Child

Dont try to make a joke of the fear. Its real to the child and thats what matters. You may think youre making light of their fear by poking fun at it, dismissing it or teasing them about it but this is known to be unhelpful. It can make the fear last longer and worse, affect the childs trust in you.

However small the childs fear seems to you, always listen to them with patience and sympathy. Avoid becoming exasperated or annoyed at the child. You are there to be supportive and work towards a solution. Any sign of derision will be counter-productive.

Give the child something to fight back with. Create some form of protection for them. This could be a superhero toy or special anti-monster potion (water in a simple spray bottle) or a cartoon character flashlight. This will give the child back some of the power that the fear takes away.

Dont insist that the child sleeps in the dark. If you were scared of spiders, how would you like to be forced to have a tarantula on your hand?

Nightlights (timed and continuous) are available. Leave a small bedside light on until you go to bed. Give the child a flashlight to use whenever they want.

The need for light usually only lasts for a short time so allow the child this simple request. Try and play it down so that the child doesnt become totally dependant on it.

Try and avoid having the child sleep with you. This is a difficult habit to break so its best not to start it. If they come to you, saying theyre scared, simply take them back to bed. Check the room out and reassure them that they are quite safe.

If necessary, stay until the child settles.

Try not to worry too much about the fear. It is normal and happens to a lot of children. If you deal with it calmly and in a helpful way, it should pass within a few weeks or months.

How To Be A Perfect Babysitter

It feels good to know that you provide with an excellent and reliable babysitter service. It is normal for a babysitter to baby-sit for the same household frequently and this may be beneficial for all the parties. From previous knowledge, the parents would feel contented if they leave the children in your hands, as they know that you are capable of good babysitter service. They can, thus, be able to have a comfortable and pleasant time outside. Now the question is: what you should do so that the family will look for your babysitter service yet again? Remember to watch out for the fundamental principles of babysitter service. Report to the job on time and dress properly. The perfect type of clothing would be a clean sweater and well-ironed jeans since you may go up the stairs unexpectedly or crawl on the floor with the kids. Keep your shoes near the door and cut your nails short and clean. When in their home, act politely. You should leave the home they way it was when you entered it. The parents may ask you to help yourself with a snack. Make sure that you place everything in order after the snack. When the children have gone off to sleep, place the books, DVDs and toys in their original location. Shake the cushion and clean the room. Remember to clean the place if any thing spills. Always inform the parents if any thing in the house has been damaged or broken during your babysitter service. Always get a number where you can reach the parents and also ask for the time at which they are likely to come home. Call up the parents as soon as possible if the kid is injured or falls ill during the duration of your babysitter service. You will not be held responsible for the illness or accident but they will blame you if you don’t inform them. Always remember that you are to do your work of babysitter service there. If the children have gone to bed, you can watch TV or listen to music but keep the volume down. It is important that you will be able to hear the children reach out for you or when they are upset. Look out for them every once a while to ensure that they are safe and sleeping calmly. At the time of the arrival of the parents, inform them about any funny incident that took place. You can set their mind at rest by telling them that everything is under control. If things aren’t fine then tell them precisely what happened and do not be biased. You can continue with the same family if you maintain a high standard. Moreover, they will also recommend you for babysitter service to other families.

Guide to Becoming a Safe and Happy Babysitter

One of the most tried and true ways to make money as a teen is looking after children, which makes the competition stiff. You may be wondering what you can do to stand out from the rest.

Being a babysitter is obviously not a matter to be taken lightly. You’re protecting someone’s pride and joy, someone young and vulnerable enough to need constant supervision from you. The consequences of slacking off on this job can be dire. Keep that in mind while undergoing any training programs. Remember that one day you might need to use these skills and take it seriously. So how should you convince someone that you are capable of taking care of their most important asset? Well, ARE you capable of taking care of someone else’s children? This may be stating the obvious, but if your little cousin makes your hair stand on end after 20 minutes babysitting isn’t for you. Can you handle possibly changing diapers, feeding, clothing, and comforting potentially messy, screaming, or (god forbid) braty little kids? Think about it.

First Aid & Credentials

An area of great importance to parents looking for a babysitter is proficiency in first aid. Should something unfortunate happen these skills can save lives.

The American Red Cross offers an invaluable guide to babysitting, everything from a handy handbook to training in first aid, appropriate games, diapering & feeding, and much more.
There are a number of other babysitting courses offered online, but this one offers everything you need specifically for babysitting and a big bonus is that it’s from a source Americans trust. Check your local Red Cross chapter for dates and times here: http://www.redcross.org/services/hss/courses/babyindex.html

Getting Work

There are a number of online databases offering a plethora of babysitters from all over the nation. Convenient, right? The downfall is that many of these require fees from either the babysitter or potential clients, which can be a turn off. The upside, however, is the traffic that these sites recieve, as well as the background checks and other requirements they may contain that make it easier for parents to select a trustworthy sitter with less work on their part.

Don’t underestimate the effect of grassroots marketing. If you’re computer savvy, create a cute flyer and print it out. If you’ve got boxes upon boxes of crafts, make it by hand. Include the obvious essentials; name, age, phone number, city or cities you can get to (don’t include your home address on something this public), days and hours you’re available, any credentials, and the age/number of children you feel comfortable taking care of (can you change diapers? Do you feel safe handling very young children?) Copy these off and post them places that parents frequent; super markets, adult schools, large office complexes. Ask business owners specializing in children’s products to let you post one. Drop a few off at family or friends houses and ask them to refer you to anyone seeking a sitter. You can also utilize such sites as Craigslist.com, but excersize proper precautions when dealing with anyone you don’t personally know, especially from the internet.

Pricing

This can be a tricky subject. It’s really up to you how much you want to charge, but the deciding factor is what people are willing to pay. Try to check out what the going rate is for sitters around your age and qualifications. If you’ve got more experience than most you can charge accordingly. There are other factors that may affect what you’re willing to accept. If you’re especially fond of the children and parents you might see yourself being ok with a pay cut. It’s not only about making the most money possible, but being in a desirable work environment.

Being Safe & Selective

Babysitting differs greatly from most jobs in that you will be in someone else’s home for the duration of your work. Ideally you should try to work for people you know and trust; family, friends of family, coworkers, and people who you are familiar with. Unfortunately this may not be a substantial amount of work and you’ll have to open yourself up to new clients. Any trustworthy parents should request an interview with you prior to hiring. You may be nervous but remember that this is your chance to interview them as well. If you feel uneasy about any aspect of their home or personalities, don’t risk it. There will be other oppurtunities, and as cliched as it sounds, better safe than sorry.

Another aspect of being selective is not subjecting yourself to anything you can’t handle or aren’t comfortable with. If your first job is watching 4 kids from 8 a.m to 6 p.m, you might want to reconsider or bring a friend along to help. If you find yourself watching a child who is a little monster, sever the relationship. Do it professionally and let the parents know why you’re choosing not to work for them anymore. Don’t stick around because they tip you well if you’re miserable.

In addition, don’t accept underpayments or unexpected changes in scheduled times. It’s one thing for a trusted and respected client to come up short one week and repay you the next, but if you’re dealing with someone who habitually tries to pay you less than what’s agreed upon or are inconsistent with payments, speak with them about it. If it isn’t resolved then perhaps you should resign. If you’ve agreed upon a certain range of hours for you to watch the kids, the parents should stick to them. We all know that certain events can take place which may force a delay on their part, but if parents are constantly telling you they’ll be home by 5 then not showing up until 7, that’s unacceptable. Especially if it interferes with your family, social life, or most importantly, school work. Unfortunately you may find that people think they can take advantage of you because of your age, don’t let this happen.
